Afghanistan plans to expand trade, transit ties with Iran

Afghanistan is planning to broaden trade and transit ties with Iran, said the governor general of the Afghan province of Herat in Mashhad on Tuesday.

Mohammad Asef Rahimi said in a meeting with Alireza Rashidian, the governor general of Khorasan Razavi Province, and a group of provincial businessmen that the two countries have taken great strides towards expanding cooperation in economic, scientific, cultural and sports fields.

In the healthcare sector, he said, sophisticated surgical operations including kidney transplant have been carried out in Herat Province in cooperation with Iranian specialists.

Narcotic drugs production and human trafficking are among the main problems facing Afghanistan, he said, blaming terrorist groups for the predicament.

Also speaking at the gathering, Iran's Consul General in Herat Mahmoud Afkhami said expansion of communications with neighboring countries is among the priorities of Iranian foreign policy.

Herat, with an area of 55,000 square kilometers and a population of 1.8 million, is the third largest province of Afghanistan. It is located in the west of Afghanistan bordering Khorasan Razavi Province.
