Quake jolts north Iran

An earthquake, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, jolted Juybar Country, Mazandaran Province, northern Iran, on Thursday.

According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 12:55:40 hours local time (8:25 GMT) in an area located at 36.66 degrees latitude and 52.97 degrees longitude and in the depth of 13 km underground, IRNA reported.

The quake was also felt in a big part of the southern coast of the Caspian Sea.

People fled their homes in haste in fear of collapse of their buildings.

No reports have been released on possible damage to life or properties.

Iran sits on major seismological fault lines, which makes it one of the world's most quake-prone countries.
