Rouhani to meet Putin, Erdogan in Sochi on Syria

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is scheduled to travel to Russia on Thursday in a bid to hold talks with his Russian and Turkish counterparts on Syria.

“Rouhani will travel to the Russian city of Sochi [on the Black Sea coast] at the formal invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the trilateral summit of presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey,” according to a statement published by the Iranian government on Tuesday.

The three presidents are supposed to discuss joint fight against terrorism in the region and return of the displaced Syrians to their country, according to the statement.

The three countries say they want a political settlement to end the Syrian conflict.

Turkey currently hosts some 3.6 million Syrian refugees, according to estimates.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed terrorism since March 2011. Seven years into the deadly conflict, however, the Syrian government has been able to score major victories against Daesh and other terrorist groups, purging them from most parts of the country with help from Iran and Russia.
