Official: Iran-Russia-Syria strategic cooperation against terrorism to continue

Strategic cooperation among Iran, Russia and Syria on fight against terrorism will continue, Iranian Foreign Minister’s Special Assistant for Political Affairs Ali-Asghar Khaji said.

The Iranian official made the remarks in a meeting with Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Hassan Mahmoud on Saturday, according to IRNA.

“The strategic cooperation among Russia, Syria, and Iran in the fight against the evil phenomenon of terrorism and the ongoing consultations among the three countries for the political settlement of the crisis in Syria will continue,” Khaji said.

Khaji also stressed the importance of cooperation among Iran, Russia and Turkey within the Astana format for peace in Syria which has been fighting foreign-backed terrorists since 2011.

The three countries are the guarantor countries that brokered a cease-fire in Syria in December 2016, leading to the Astana talks.

Referring to the US unilateral sanctions against Syria amid the global outbreak of the new coronavirus, Khaji called on the international community to support Syria’s people, national sovereignty and territorial integrity within the framework of the international law and in the fight against terrorism.

Syria’s Ambassador to the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari said on May 10 unilateral sanctions imposed by the Western countries are hampering the Damascus’ efforts to import medicine and other medical supplies to fight the deadly novel coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The Syrian diplomat noted that sanctions continue to reduce the capacity of Syria’s public and private health sectors since the measures have affected the country’s banking sector, left it bereft of financial resources, made money transfers difficult and negatively influenced the fields of energy, industry, transport, communications as well as domestic and foreign trade.

During the Saturday’s meeting, the Syrian envoy highlighted the strategic ties between Syria and Iran, calling for the continuation of consultations at the bilateral and regional levels.
