Iran, Russia confer on latest developments in Afghanistan

Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali and Russian presidential envoy to Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov exchanged views on the latest regional developments, especially issues concerning Afghanistan.

Both officials emphasized the need for further interaction and cooperation between the two countries on Afghanistan, IRNA reported.
They also expressed an interest in regular consultations in this regard.
Iran and Russia are trying to find a solution to internal tensions in Afghanistan.
Iran has repeatedly announced its readiness to help the Afghan government advance the peace process in its conflict-ridden neighboring country.
In recent months, Iranian officials have held talks with Afghan officials in an effort to help Afghanistan overcome its ongoing problems.
Recently, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi visited Kabul and met several Afghan officials.
In a meeting with Afghanistan’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Hanif Atmar on July 15, Araqchi reiterated Iran’s support for the peace process in Afghanistan, led by its government.
He expressed hope that the intra-Afghan peace talks would soon kick off with the participation of all political factions, including the Taliban group.
He also stressed that the Tehran stands ready to assist the Afghan government with advancing the peace process given the mutual concerns and interests of the two neighboring countries.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 shortly after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. While the invasion ended the Taliban’s rule in the country, it has failed to eliminate the militant group.
The Taliban have never stopped attacks, citing foreign military presence as one of the main reasons behind their continued militancy.
As a result of the prolonged foreign occupation, the Daesh terrorist group has also emerged in recent years in the Asian country.
