Ex-Iranian wrestler, commentator Navaei dies at 71

Sports Desk

Former Iranian freestyle wrestler and TV commentator Mohammadreza Navaei died at the age of 71.

Navaei won a 62kg bronze medal at the 1973 World Championships in Tehran, before repeating his medal a year later in the 1974 Asian Games – also held in the Iranian capital.

As a wrestling coach, he steered Iran in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul – where Asgari Mohammadian grabbed the sole medal for the Iranian camp with a 57kg silver – and then was the assistant coach to Mansour Barzegar in the World Championships in 1990-94 and the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Navaei, also the head coach of Indonesia in the 1978 World Championships, will probably be remembered by some younger generation of wrestling fans for his memorable commentaries during numerous wrestling competitions in the late 80s and early 90s.
