Iran’s total COVID-19 death toll nears 18,000

Iran's Health Ministry announced on Thursday that the total number of deaths caused by the fatal coronavirus in the country has reached 17,976 cases by the latest 174 citizens who have lost their lives over the past 24 hours due to the COVID-19 virus.

According to spokesperson of the Health Ministry Sima Sadat Lari, during the said period, another 2,634 cases of infection with COVID-19 virus were found in the country and 1,304 of them have been hospitalized, IRNA reported.

Lari added that a total of 320,117 Iranians have so far been confirmed infected with the COVID-19virus while 277,463 of them were declared recovered and discharged from hospital.

She noted another 4,156 other COVID-19 patients are in critical condition and under treatment in intensive care units.

Lari said that 2,612,763 tests have so far been carried out in Iran.

Iran, the worst-hit country from the coronavirus in West Asia, has been battling a resurgence of the virus, with official figures showing a rise in both new infections and deaths since a two-month low in May.

This has prompted Iran to make wearing masks mandatory in enclosed spaces and reimpose restrictions lifted gradually since April to reopen the country’s sanctions-hit economy.
