Iran’s Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said 3,097 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the country from Saturday to Sunday, bringing the total number of the new cases to 422,140.

Speaking at a daily press conference on Sunday, Lari added that 183 more Iranians lost their lives due to the virus during the same period, according to IRNA.

She put the total death toll from the virus, known as COVID-19, at 24,301.

The ministry’s spokeswoman said that 1,272 of the new positive cases have been hospitalized.

She added that 359,570 people so far have been recovered or discharged from the hospitals across the country, which is the hardest-hit in the West Asia.

The spokeswoman said 3,898 other COVID-19 patients are in critical conditions and are being treated in intensive care units.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday called on people to observe the health protocols more seriously, warning against the outbreak of new epidemics as the cold season is approaching, according to Tasnim News Agency.

Pointing to reports of cases of a pneumonia-like disease in a number of neighboring countries that is more dangerous than COVID-19, the president said it is necessary to take intensified precautionary measures as the disease may spread to Iran as autumn is coming.

Iran has been trying to contain the spread of the virus by enforcing social distancing measures and making face masks mandatory in public places since the outbreak of the virus in the country in February.

But, recent holidays in the country, during which many people traveled to other cities, led to the increase of new cases in the country.

Iran’s Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi on Thursday declared a coronavirus red alert covering the entire country as daily deaths and cases increase at an alarming rate.
