Iran’s eastern city of Khaf in Razavi Khorasan and Afghanistan’s western city of Herat have been connected through a railroad inaugurated on Wednesday.

Built with Iran’s help, the Khaf-Herat railroad was inaugurated on October 27 transporting passengers from Iran to Afghanistan on its first trip which was welcomed by the people of both countries, IRNA reported.

Jilani Farhad, spokesman of Herat governor, said the train transported an Iranian delegation to Herat on its first trip and will soon be able to transport more passengers and goods bringing about sustainable development for both countries.

Moreover, an Afghan trader, Abdulali Sarvari, told IRNA that the railroad will connects Afghanistan, a landlocked country, not only to Iran but also to the Central Asian countries as well as other parts of the world through Chabahar Port.

He added the railroadd reduces the costs and shortens the time of transporting goods.

The Khaf-Herat railroad is expected to transport two million tons of goods and 200,000 passengers per year.
