Iran: Meetings with Taliban officials aimed at establishing peace in Afghanistan
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said that meetings between Iranian and Taliban officials are in line with Iran’s efforts to establish peace in Afghanistan.

Mousavi on Tuesday confirmed that Iran’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian, has held talks with Taliban leaders in Qatar’s capital on Monday, IRNA reported.

He said that the meetings between Iranian and Taliban officials are in line with Tehran’s efforts to hold intra-Afghan talks with the aim of establishing peace, stability and security in Afghanistan.

Mousavi said that Taherian held separate meetings with the Taliban political deputy as well as Qatar’s special envoy for Afghanistan.

The Iranian and Taliban officials discussed a range of issues at the meeting in Doha, including the de-escalation of violence in Afghanistan, the launch of intra-Afghan negotiations without interference from foreign forces, the US in particular, as well as the common interests of Iran and Afghanistan, according to Iran Front Page.

Iran has stepped up its efforts to help end decades of civil war in the neighboring country. The Iranian official has held several meetings with the country’s political factions in recent months.
