Foreign minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed issues of mutual interests, especially Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal, in a meeting on July 21 with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.

Zarif arrived in Moscow earlier on Tuesday morning on a one-day visit to discuss bilateral cooperation as well as major regional and international developments with senior Russian officials, IRNA reported.

Iranian ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali and Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi were also present in Zarif-Lavrov meeting.

While in Moscow, the Iranian foreign minister is to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and hand over a message from President Hassan Rouhani to his Russian counterpart.

Speaking exclusively to IRNA upon his arrival in Moscow, Zarif voiced Tehran's readiness to extend a 20-year cooperation agreement with Moscow which will expire in March 2021.

The extension of a 20-year agreement between Iran and Russia is on the agenda of talks between the Iranian delegation and the Russian officials, Zarif said.

Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali, who accompanied Zarif during the one-day visit, said Tehran is interested in buying new weapons from Moscow to enhance its defense capabilities.

"We will hold consultations with Russia on what we need to enhance our defense capabilities ... Russia is our priority partner in this sense," Jalali said.
