Zarif stresses need to update document on Iran-Russia long-term cooperation
The Iranian foreign minister stressed the need to update the document of a 20-year long-term cooperation between Iran and Russia.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif made the remarks in a meeting with the Chairman of the Russian Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee Leonid Slutsky in Tehran on Sunday, according to IRNA.
Referring to the level of cooperation between Iran and Russia in various fields, the Iranian top diplomat emphasized the need to update the long-term cooperation document between the two countries to the level of strategic ties.
Zarif recently paid a one-day visit to Moscow to hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
Upon his arrival in Moscow, Zarif said that Iran plans to extend the 20-year cooperation agreement with Russia, which will expire in March 2021.
The top Iranian diplomat emphasized that the two sides can also discuss another long-term deal in case the Russian side is willing to do so.
Iran and China have also recently agreed to develop a 25-year roadmap for developing strategic partnership.
The agreement is to serve as a roadmap defining the quality of the countries’ strategic relations for the subsequent 25-year period. It is expected to ditch the dollar in bilateral trade by bringing in each side’s legal tender instead and bypass the illegal and unilateral sanctions that the United States reimposed on the Islamic Republic in 2018.
The roadmap is expected to enable such level of coordination between Tehran and Beijing that it could eat away at Washington’s sway in the region and further frustrate its attempts at isolating Tehran.
Elsewhere in his remarks on Sunday, Zarif described the parliamentary relations between Iran and Russia, and especially the emphasis of the two parliaments on strengthening the strategic relations between the two countries as important.
The two sides also discussed the latest issues on the Iran nuclear agreement, expansion of cooperation, as well as the latest developments in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Libya.
